If submitting to the Research Track, the same submission format and review process as other areas apply. If submitting to Embedded Systems Track, please follow the format specified by that track. ESS (Embedded Systems and Software) are an increasingly diverse, disruptive, and challenging field for designs ranging from mobile devices to medical devices to industrial and beyond. Embedded software is built into devices that may not necessarily be recognized as computing devices, but nevertheless controls the functionality and perceived quality of these devices.

The technical program provides education for me and my colleagues, while the exhibits allow for firsthand interaction with vendors. The DAC conference draws over 5,000 attendees that allows me to meet and collaborate with other designers in the ecosystem. Dr. Gary L. Security topic at DAC focuses on the urgent need to create, analyze, evaluate, and improve the hardware, embedded systems and software base of the contemporary security solutions. Secure and trustworthy software and hardware components, platforms and supply chains are vital to all domains including financial, healthcare, transportation, and energy. A revolution is underway in many industries that are "connecting the unconnected". Such cyber physical systems, e.g., automobiles, smart grid, medical devices, etc., are taking advantage of integration of physical systems with the information systems. Notwithstanding the numerous benefits, these systems are appealing targets of attacks.

She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the ACM and IEEE, and a recipient of the ACM/IEEE-CS Ken Kennedy award. As a design engineer in the electronic design ecosystem, I attend DAC to find the latest solutions and methodologies in AI, EDA, chip verification, design, and more.

As a rough metric of the importance of the trade show portion, about 6,300 people attended DAC in 2018, whereas ICCAD, at least as strong technically but with no trade show, drew perhaps a tenth as many attendees. The trade show features approximately 100 companies in the field of design automation such as Cadence Design Systems, Synopsys, Siemens EDA and Ansys. Prior to joining Tenstorrent, he served two years as Senior Vice President of Intel's Silicon Engineering Group. Design Enablement is charged with delivering the Process Design Kits (PDKs), Test-Chips, Design-Technology Co-Optimization (DTCO), and Foundational IP (FIP) & Embedded Memory Solutions to maximize technology value and meet customer needs and schedules. Prior to that, Dr. Patton was vice president of IBM’s Semiconductor Research and Development Center—a position that he held for eight years where he was responsible for IBM’s semiconductor R&D, design enablement, and technology development alliances. Dr. Patton is a well-recognized industry leader in semiconductor technology R&D with over 30 years of semiconductor experience. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and recipient of the 2017 IEEE Frederik Philips Award for industry influence and leadership in the development of leading-edge microelectronics technology and collaborative research. In 2016, Dr. Patton was inducted into the VLSI Research Hall of Fame for his contributions to the advancement of the semiconductor industry over several decades. Dr. Patton received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from UCLA and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

During his tenure at the company, he founded AMD Research where he oversaw the company’s worldwide research and advanced technology labs, university engagements, and external research contracting. Alan also led extreme-scale computing technology at AMD, where he drove the software and hardware engineering efforts to build the world’s fastest platforms for machine learning, industrial, and scientific applications. The ESS sessions at DAC provide a forum for discussing the challenges of embedded design and an opportunity for researchers and engineers to come together to exchange ideas and roadmaps for the future for this rapidly expanding area. For Embedded Systems-focused contents, they can either be submitted to the regular Research or Embedded Systems Track.
